The idea of commercial properties being dull square boxes is being blown away by designers around the world. Along with their interiors, the buildings are being treated to some unusual, and often breath taking concepts. It is time that commercial properties and office blocks are given the chance to mimic the innovation that takes place inside. Below are a few of my favorite office blocks, I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I do.
The Bar Code Building
This building is located in St Petersburg in Russia, and I feel this design is particularly apt for a commercial building. Though perhaps not the most original design as far as shape is concerned, the concept of the bar code integrated into the windows of the building is a great idea. Walking past on the sidewalk you might totally miss the concept, but take a step back and the bar code design leaps out at you.
Basque Health Department Building
The new headquarters of the Basque Health Department has been situated in Bilbao, Spain, and is another addition to the building reputation Spain has for stunning modern architecture. Coll-Barreu Arquitectos have designed a building that is not only stunning to look at but is also completely practical. The glass facade not only allows light to flood the offices in the building, it also adds superb insulating properties, which has taken away the need for air conditioning. The building also seems to change shape as the angled panels give a different perception from different viewing points, another unusual feature.
Surely this is one of the most interesting and unique buildings in the world, let alone as a commercial one. The Cybertecture Egg was designed by James Law Cybertecture International and Ove Arup, and is located in Mumbai, India. The egg symbolizes birth, and it could be that this is the birth of a more popular design idea. The structure is designed to have floor plates held in its steel frame without any structural columns, it also takes up much less space than a building with this area should. There is nothing more representative of nature than the egg, and even the energy in this building is natural as it takes its on-site power from the sun and the wind.
National Fisheries Development Board Office
Situated in Andhra Pradesh, India is this fun building that has been constructed in the shape of a fish. The building is not only functional it also adds some needed humor for the staff inside. Feeling like Jonah in the belly of the whale is a fitting way for fishing development workers to spend their day. The four story building opened in April 2012 and has had nothing but compliments since.
These four buildings are all unique in their own way, and their looks will have people talking about them for years to come. There is no reason that commercial properties should be any less interesting than any other types of property, and these examples show that anything is possible; even for commercial properties.
